North Cornwall's MP calls for debate on large seaweed farms
Ben Maguire says it is vital local communities are properly consulted
North Cornwall's MP has called for a debate in Parliament about the consultation process for large seaweed farms .
Liberal Democrat Ben Maguire said he wanted MPs to discuss how to ensure the Marine Management Organisation "properly informs, involves and consults with communities" when approving licences for large seaweed farms.
Speaking in the Commons, Mr Maguire said people living in Port Isaac were left "angered and frustrated by a lack of consultation" into plans for seaweed farms there.
The MP told Greatest Hits Radio the public had not been "properly consulted" on the licence.
"I'll be fighting tooth and nail... engaging with groups there, and ensuring their voices are actually heard."
Mr Maguire added he had already met with Fisheries Minister Daniel Zeichner to discuss the issue.
Responding to North Cornwall's MP, the Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell said she will ensure he gets a response from the government "if he continues not to make progress" in discussions with the Marine Management Organisation.
A spokesperson for the Marine Management Organisation says they have met with Mr Maguire to discuss his concerns and explain the statutory requirements and consultation process.
