The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 164 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 22,863 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on July 27th (Tuesday), up from 22,699 on Monday.

The rate of infection in Cornwall now stands at 3,998 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 8,907.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 23,228 over the period, to 5,745,526.

Almost all areas in Cornwall are now classed as Covid 'clusters', which means there are three or more recorded cases.

Newquay still has the highest number, with 170 new cases recorded in the seven days to Thursday 22nd July.

That includes 107 in Newquay East, which has a case rate of 1,073.7 per 100,000 people.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 478 people had died in the area by July 27th (Tuesday) - which was unchanged from Monday.

It means there have been four deaths in the past week, which is an increase on one the previous week.

They were among 6,857 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death, so some areas might see their figures revised down.

The figures also show that nearly three-quarters of people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 348,296 people had received both jabs by July 26 (Monday) - 71% of those aged 18 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 71% of people aged 18 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
