Newquay Town Council is proud to announce that Brad Pauls, a local hero and newly crowned British Middleweight Champion, has been honoured with a Citizenship Award for Outstanding Achievement..

Brad, affectionately known as the “The Newquay Bomb”, beat Stoke’s Nathan Heaney in Birmingham on 20th July 2024. By winning the fight, Pauls became the first Cornish fighter to win a British title since 1939, bringing pride not only to Newquay but to the whole of Cornwall.

The Newquay Town Council Citizenship Award is presented to individuals who have made significant positive impacts on the community, embodying the spirit of the town through their actions and achievements. “Brad’s journey from a young boy training in local gyms to becoming the British Middleweight Champion is a story that resonates deeply with our community,” said Cllr Drew Creek, Mayor of Newquay. “He has not only brought national recognition to Newquay but has also been a role model for our youth, demonstrating that with hard work and dedication, dreams can indeed come true. We are honoured to present Brad with this Citizenship Award as a token of our appreciation and pride.”

Upon receiving the award, which was presented by Newquay Deputy Mayor Cllr Margaret North, Pauls said: “Thank you very much. I appreciate the support – I’ve really felt the love since the fight. I’m absolutely honoured to get this award. Hopefully more belts to come to Newquay in Cornwall. Peace and love!”

The award ceremony took place at the Killacourt Bandstand in Newquay during a family fun day arranged by the Town Council on Saturday 23rd August, where Brad was joined by family, friends, and members of the local community. The event was a celebration not only of Brad’s recent victory but of his ongoing contributions to the town.
