New youth centre opens in Callington
"The Vault" is based in the former Lloyds Bank building on Fore Street
Callington's first youth centre in many years has officially opened.
The old Lloyds Bank in Fore Street has become "The Vault", which will be holding sessions every Wednesday afternoon.
They held their first drop-in session on Wednesday (24th April).
It has been set up by Callington Youth Project Group (CYPG), who say they're hoping to hold more frequent sessions in the future.
CYPG has a two year lease on the whole building and has modified the ground floor to accommodate a multi-resource youth centre.
Paul Carey, Chair of CYPG said: "We are delighted to have established for the first time in many years a dedicated youth centre in Callington.
"Starting with weekly drop-in sessions on Wednesdays we hope to provide opportunities for young people aged 13-21.
"We have music and computer games, a band area with a full PA and sound mixing system for young musicians, a snack bar and chill out areas.
"In the longer term we want to increase the number of sessions we can offer, which will complement our established Monday evening LiveWireBus service to Saltash.
"Further ahead we hope to establish a permanent youth centre for the young people in the town and surrounding area."
Callington Youth Project Group is a voluntary organisation set up with the aim of providing opportunities for the young people of Callington and the surrounding area.
The occasion also marks the second anniversary of CYPG’s "LiveWireBus" service. The bus takes young people from Callington and the surrounding area to two youth clubs in Saltash.
To allow it to become more independent, CYPG purchased a second-hand minibus in September 2022 which is still in active service.
Paul Carey, Chair of CYPG said: "Having our own ‘bus gives us independence and allows us to offer more flexible access not just other youth clubs, but also to other activities that our young people want to do.
"We can also make the minibus available to other community groups. We very much appreciate the support of Live Wire in Saltash, and our local community in helping us keep this service running."
