'Multi-agency incident' as large barn fire breaks out near to A30 in mid-Cornwall

A large barn fire has broken out in mid-Cornwall, close to the Mitchell turn-off on the A30.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service have described the blaze as a 'multi-agency incident'.

Officials say hazardous materials are involved and there are reports of burning fertiliser.

Residents living in and around the Gummows Shop area have been warned to keep doors and windows closed.

Police, South Western Ambulance Service, Cornwall Council, Public Health England and the Environment Agency are involved, along with the Met Office.

"At 11:43 we received a 999 call from a premises reporting a fire in a barn. Three appliances were mobilised, two from Newquay and one from Truro. A Station Manager was also mobilised.

"On arrival an arrival an assistance message was sent first for 4 Pumps, then 6 and then 8, as well as a request for a Water Carriers, Aerial Appliance, Operational Support Unit, Environmental Support Unit and Incident Command Unit.

"A Tactical Commander has taken command of the incident and is working with their counterparts from Police and Ambulance to develop a plan to resolve the incident.

"Resources are currently on scene from Newquay, Truro, Perranporth, St Columb, St Dennis, Wadebridge, St Austell, Tolvaddon, Liskeard, Penzance and Launceston.

"This is a multi-agency incident involving Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service, Cornwall Council, Public Health England, Environment Agency and Met Office.

"The advice to members of the public at present is to keep doors and windows closed if you live in the area of Gummow's Shop, Summercourt".

They later added: “Update 1830: Firefighters are using two hose reels to damp down hot spots on the extinguished blaze. The incident is starting to scale down with appliances returning to their home stations. Two appliances, A water Carrier and the Incident Command Unit will remain on scene overnight”.

Inrix Traffic and Travel, says the A3076 is closed in both directions between the junction for Mitchell on the A30 and the A3058 and is likely to remain shut through the night.

"A3076 in both directions closed. Slow traffic due to building fire between A30 (Mitchell turn-off) and A3058.

"Fertiliser is currently burning.

"There is a large barn fire at Tredinnick Farm.

"Police are asking people in the area to shut all windows and doors".

They later added: “Road remains closed between Mitchell and Gummows Shop due to a ongoing large barn fire. The closure is expected to remain in place into Monday night”.
