More ShelterBox response team members to arrive in Morocco
The Cornwall-based international disaster relief charity has been meeting people affected by the earthquake
More response team members from a Cornwall-based international disaster relief charity will be arriving in Morocco this week and beyond.
A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the High Atlas Mountains on 8 September, killing nearly 3,000 people.
A response team from ShelterBox has been meeting people affected, as well as assessing damage to villages in the mountains to decide what combinations of aid will be most suitable.
Dave Raybould is heading up the team in Marrakesh. He says the damage to villages they've visited is severe:
"There are no official figures yet reporting on displacement or the number of properties damaged, but destruction in some areas that we've seen is pretty absolute.
"The community that we visited yesterday, not one building was left standing from their entire village that was on the mountain top - 60 families were living there. They've relocated to a nearby river bank, maybe 100 metres away from their original property.
"We're now looking to support those families and families like them with tents, blankets, solar lights and kitchen sets.
"We've got more ShelterBox response team members arriving in Marrakesh this week and beyond, to work on getting aid into the country and to supporting those communities most in need."
ShelterBox has experience responding to earthquakes before, most recently in Türkiye and Syria.
The charity are also working to set up a response in Libya too following devastating floods. They hope to support people whose homes have been severely damaged or washed away.
