It looks like summer doesn't want to leave quite yet, with parts of Cornwall set to reach 27C in a so-called 'mini heatwave'.

It's going to be a scorcher across the country today (7th September) with the Duchy forecast to bask in hot sunshine.

According to the Met Office the warmest areas here include Wadebridge with 28C, Bude and Plymouth at 27C, followed by Bodmin and Newquay at 26C.

For the warm spell to be classed as a proper heatwave temperatures of over 25C would have to last for three days or more in the same area, which unfortunately isn't the case.

The sunshine will be followed by the chance of showers tomorrow and even thunder later in the week.

Marco Petagna from the Met Office told us: "So it's very warm now with top temperatures around 28 or 29 degrees, it's not that unusual for the time of year.

"For those with outdoor plans, having to work outside in the heat at the moment, or if you're just sensitive to the warm weather do try and keep your skin covered up with lose, light clothing. Perhaps wear a hat if, like me, you're lacking in a full head of hair and keep water with you to stay hydrated."

Here is the forecast for the rest of the week:

Today:

Any fog or mist soon clearing, leaving the day largely fine across the region with prolonged sunshine. Turning breezy but still feeling very warm to locally hot. Maximum temperature 28 °C.

Tonight:

Many seeing clear skies, but cloud slowly moving in from the west will bring the chance of a few showers through the night over Devon and Cornwall. Feeling humid. Minimum temperature 16 °C.

Wednesday:

Heavy showers are possible with a risk of some rumbles of thunder. Sunny spells elsewhere with temperatures back to around normal for most. Maximum temperature 26 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Scattered showers on Thursday, heavy at times and with a risk of thunder. Further showers possible on Friday. Many areas dry on Saturday but a few showers are still possible.
