Mineshaft hole appears in Cornish road
It's eight years after another hole opened up on the same road
A mineshaft hole has appeared in a Cornish road, eight years after another hole opened up on the same road.
The hole was discovered on Gwallon Lane in Marazion on Tuesday evening (August 29) and was immediately surrounded by barriers and safety cones.
A Cornwall Council spokesperson said: “Our contractors Cormac have secured the site of the collapse, believed to have been caused by a mining feature. Engineers are carrying out investigations to identify the work needed to repair the road, which will be carried out as soon as possible. The road remains open, but closures may be needed depending on the work required.”
A mineshaft previously collapsed on the same road in 2015. That one was more serious and was described by Devon and Cornwall Police as up to 50ft (15m) deep. Staff at nearby Wheal Rodney Holiday Park said at the time they had no idea it was the site of a mine and that the hole had opened without warning.
