Multiple crews called to massive fire on industrial estate in St Ives

A massive fire has broken out on an industrial estate in St Ives, with people being urged to avoid the area.

Footage posted on social media shows the flames streaming from the roof of a laundry firm on Penbeagle.

At one point the smoke was so thick, it could be seen from across the estuary at Hayle.

The extent of the damage is still unclear is but at its height, crews from across west Cornwall were battling the blaze.

Crews from St Ives received the initial call at around 6.30am on Thursday, before requesting back-up from Hayle, Penzance, Tolvaddon, Truro, Falmouth and Perranporth.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service says seven major pumping appliances are now at the scene, along with specialist appliances and aerial ladder platforms.

They have issued a warning asking people in the area to stay away.

Teams at the cordon have told us several pockets of fire are still burning and it is likely to be a few more hours before the blaze is out.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "At 0624 hrs Critical Control received multiple calls reporting a fire at an industrial unit in St Ives.

"Two appliances from St Ives were mobilised along with a flexi duty officer.

"On arrival crews requested additional three major pumping appliances and the aerial ladder platform.

"Crews from Hayle, Tolvaddon, Truro, Penzance & Falmouth were mobilised as well as an additional officer.

"At 0729 message received 'Make Pumps 7' so further resources from Perranporth and Penzance were mobilised.

"The incident is now sectorised with good progress been made.

"Western Power and Wales & West Utilities are also in attendance".
