Man dies after falling from bridge over A30 near Redruth

Trained police negotiators were called to the scene

A man in his 40s has died after falling from a bridge over the A30 near Redruth.

Police were called amid concerns for a person's welfare just after 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon and the road was closed in both directions.

The man had been on the wrong side of the railings on an overbridge at Tolgus Place.

Trained negotiators were also called to the scene.

Officers have confirmed that the man fell from the bridge at around 7.20pm and his family have been told.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The eastbound carriageway was reopened in one direction that evening, and the westbound side was reopened later at night.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 4.35pm on Tuesday 7th September following concern for the welfare of a man aged in his 40s on the wrong side of the railings on an A30 overbridge viaduct at Tolgus Place, Redruth.

"The road was closed in both directions and officers and trained negotiators attended the scene.

"The man fell from the bridge at around 7.20pm. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

"The eastbound carriageway of the A30 was reopened at around 7.50pm. The westbound carriageway was reopened at around 10.45pm.

"A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)."

It is the second tragedy of its kind to take place in the area in the space of a week.

Police were called to the stretch between Redruth and Tolvaddon early last Wednesday morning (1st September).

Sadly a local man in his 30s had died at the scene.
