Man in 70s dies after incident at harbour in Plymouth

Police called to reports of people in the water and in distress at Plymouth's Sutton Harbour have confirmed a man has died.

Officers say members of the public carried out CPR on the casualty in his 70s on Wednesday night but, tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services, including Coastguard Search and Rescue, also rushed to the scene just after 10.30pm.

Devon & Cornwall Police say a woman who was taken to hospital as a precaution is expected to make a full recovery.

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, however the incident is being referred to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

A force spokesperson said: "Police were called just after 10:30pm on Wednesday 17th August with reports of people in the water and in distress in Sutton Harbour, Plymouth.

"Units attended along with Coastguard Search and Rescue.

"By the time emergency services had arrived, two people were out of the water thanks to the swift action of the public who were also undertaking CPR on an unconscious man.

"Despite the best efforts by all at the scene, the man, who was in his 70s and from the Kingsbridge area, was declared deceased at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"One woman was taken to hospital as a precaution and should make a full recovery.

"This death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is to be prepared for the coroner.

"This incident will also be referred to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch".
