A major rescue has been carried out after a paddleboarder was being swept out to sea at a Cornish beauty spot.

A lifeboat and coastguard crews rushed to Godrevy on Sunday afternoon, after multiple 999 calls.

The casualty was being hit by strong offshore winds and moving quickly past the lighthouse into the bay.

HM Coastguard Portreath Rescue Team met with the first informant on the beach, while the St Ives RNLI Lifeboat were scrambled to find the paddleboarder.

Luckily, they did not need medical attention and were safely reunited with their family.

Posting on Facebook, the team said: "Portreath CRT were tasked yesterday afternoon (27th March 22) to Godrevy Cove after Falmouth Coastguard received multiple 999 calls with concern for a paddleboarder who was being swept out to sea in strong offshore winds and was moving quickly out past the lighthouse into the bay.

"We swiftly arrived on scene and located the first informant whilst the RNLI lifeboat from St Ives headed out into the bay to locate and collect the casualty and their board.

"The team then met the lifeboat with the casualty on the beach to offer further medical attention if required alongside some safety advice.

"Thankfully no further medical assistance was required and the casualty could be handed back to their concerned family on the beach".

They added: "Always remember to check the tides and the weather forecast before setting out on any beach equipment and make sure you are fully equipped for the task. If in doubt, don’t go out!

"Trouble at the coast? Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
