Devon and Cornwall Police declare 'major incident' in Exeter

Local residents have been evacuated after a suspected unexploded World War II device was found

Devon and Cornwall Police have declared a major incident in Exeter after what is believed to be an unexploded WWII device was found.

A 100 metre cordon is currently in place on Glenthorne Road.

Nearby properties, and university halls of residence, have been evacuated.

The bomb squad has also been called to the scene and police are urged to avoid the area.

"Police were called to Glenthorne Road, Exeter at around 9.20am this morning following reports that a possible unexploded WW2 device has been located.

"A 100m cordon is currently in place and a number of nearby properties are currently being evacuated. The cordon size may change in due course.

"University of Exeter staff are assisting with evacuating the nearby halls of residence.

"The Navy EOD are also on scene and the incident is ongoing."
