A busy stretch of the A30 in Cornwall was left closed for over five hours because of a lorry fire.

Smoke could be seen billowing across the carriageway in the area of Carland Cross and the road was shut in both directions on Tuesday morning (2nd November).

Newquay Police Response tweeted to say the damage to the road surface is "significant" and traffic was being diverted.

St Dennis Community Fire Station also tweeted about the incident, saying they were at the scene and making the vehicle safe.

National Highways South West have confirmed a closure was put in place between the Boxheater Junction and Summercourt, with diversions.

Once the fire was put out the vehicle was removed and the damage to the carriageway assessed.

It has now been confirmed that the road reopened at 11am and all road surface repairs have been carried out.

Highways tweeted: "Update- A30 both directions #BoxheaterJunction B3285 to #SummercourtJunction A3058, the road has now reopened. Thank you for your patience."

Intix Traffic and Travel said: "Traffic easing, earlier milk tanker fire on A30 in both directions from A39 (Carland Cross) to B3285 (Boxheater Junction).

"The road was closed for just over five hours until 11:00, the fire was extinguished around 07:30."
