A school in Launceston has been named 'the best breakfast club in the South West' in the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards 2023.

St Stephens Community Academy's breakfast club began in 2014 and supports 30 pupils.

They've been able to provide breakfast free for all the children since 2019, thanks to the generosity of the local community's donations.

Headteacher Maura Furber said: "Across the whole of the UK people are being really hard-hit with the cost-of-living.

"As schools, we've become a bit of support network for parents and for families. By supporting their children we're supporting them and enabling them to go back to work and to feel good that their children are being cared for."

It comes as new figures from Spark Market Research show that two thirds of teachers say they've seen an increase in children coming to school hungry since last year. Over a third report seeing children coming in hungry every day.

Kellogg's say breakfast clubs take pressure off of parents by providing quality food and enabling them to get to work on time or manage varied shift patterns.

Mrs Furber adds: "Every child has the right to have an education and they all need a fair start and that start is at the beginning of every moment. That is very much the value and ethos that runs our breakfast club - if you're tired, if you're hungry, you're not going to perform at your best."

The school have won ÂŁ1,000 to spend on their breakfast resources, including tables, toasters with a larger capacity, chairs for storytelling and bowls, plates and cutlery.
