A Cornish youth rugby club are benefitting from police funding.

Devon and Cornwall Police have made a £500 donation to Launceston Rugby Club to fund a new training mat for the group.

The club, run entirely by volunteers, aims to support young people by teaching them new skills and keeping them active.

The new training mat will allow players aged six and up, to learn essential tackling techniques and how to perform them safely.

The money for the equipment came from the Devon and Cornwall Police’s Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) fund.

The POCA fund is made up of money seized from criminals and proceeds made from criminal assets, that are sold by the police at auction. The Force then reinvest this money into the local community by donating it to causes who use the money to make a difference in their community.

Inspector Greg Hodgkiss, who oversees neighbourhood policing in the Launceston area, said: "Last year alone, over £14,000 was given to support local groups, charities and organisations who provide a service to the wider community.

"We’re glad to be able to give back to our local community and support these amazing projects that make such a difference."

A representative of the club said: "We really appreciate the donation from the police. It has allowed us to provide much needed equipment to continue working with and supporting young people in Cornwall.

"While we obviously focus on the game of rugby, in reality, it teaches young people many life skills like respect, fairness and teamwork. We have an amazing bunch of young people who we are so proud of, and we couldn’t do it without the support of our community.

"Our club is always looking for new players, boys and girls of all ages - no experience of rugby needed."
