The inquest into the death of a woman who was stabbed to death by her son in her home in Crowlas, near Penzance, has concluded.

Sally Poynton, 44, was tragically stabbed to death by her eldest son, Jacob Poynton-Whiting on June 22 2021.

The inquest at Cornwall Coroner's Court heard there were 'lessons to learn' after the family raised multiple concerns around Jacob's mental health at the time and attempted to seek for support for him.

Coroner Andrew Cox said: "I would like to conclude today to remember Sally, who at 44 was far too young to die. There are lessons to come from today and I will ensure they are learned."

He concluded Sally Poynton was unlawfully killed and also acknowledged concerns around understaffing in mental health services in Cornwall.

Jacob was described previously as a "lovely placid guy who was not prone to violence," in evidence shared today.

In the 24 hours before Sally's death, it was heard Jacob was hearing voices in his head. Poynton-Whiting was also presenting 'electively mute' in the months leading up to the incident.

Jacob was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and was sentenced to a hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter, by reason of diminished responsibility.

The Coroner will make recommendations over mental health staffing in Cornwall - asking for renewed efforts in recruiting sufficient staff in mental health departments.
