Huge fire breaks out at hotel in Bude

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says flames engulfed a rear kitchen and spread to the roof in the early hours of Friday

Firefighters from across Cornwall and Devon have been battling a major fire at a hotel in Bude.

Crews say flames engulfed the rear kitchen and spread to the roof of the building on Marine Drive.

The blaze broke out at around 1.20am on Friday (12th August), when critical control received multiple 999 calls.

Teams from the town, Delabole, Holsworthy and neighbouring stations across the Duchy and Devon rushed to the scene.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service have confirmed people had to be evacuated, but say everyone is safe and well.

Nearby roads have been closed while emergency services deal with the incident and drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Multiple calls were received to this incident, starting 01:20hrs.

"Callers reported a fire within a hotel on Marine Drive, Bude.

"Two appliances from Bude were immediately mobilised, along with a whole time officer for support.

"Due to the high number of calls being received and information being passed by callers, two further appliances were mobilised from Holsworthy and Delabole.

"On arrival, initial crews confirmed smoke was issuing and Made Pumps 4.

"At 01:46, crews made up further, to Make Pumps 6 and also requested an Aerial Ladder Platform to attend.

"Attending crews have confirmed one detached property with the rear kitchen area well alight and roof space involved.

"In addition to six appliances, in attendance/requested are three whole time officers, one incident command unit, one operational support vehicle, one aerial ladder platform, one L4P, two water carriers, a high-volume pump and a welfare vehicle.

"Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is being assisted by colleagues from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service due to the location of the incident".

At 6am on Friday (13th August), the fire service added: "The blaze is now under control. Everyone is confirmed safe and well and CFRS / DSFRS crews continue to remain on scene to prevent escalation.

"Please avoid the area to allow crews to continue to operate.

"Road closures are now in place in the vicinity of the hotel".

At 6.40am, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Incident is now scaling back, with some appliances returning to home stations. Sectors remain in place with crews firefighting hot spots. Evacuated persons have been given alternative accommodation".

Inrix Traffic and Travel said: "Marine Drive closed due to building fire at a hotel between Upton (Upton) and Widemouth Bay (Widemouth Bay).

"Although the fire is now under control, the road remains closed as fire fighters continue to dampen down the scene".
