A massive fire has broken out by the side of the A30 near Redruth, with thick smoke seen billowing across the carriageway.

Traffic and travel service, Inrix, has described the blaze near the Avers junction as 'serious'.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service tweeted: "We are currently on scene of a fire on the verge of the A30 at Avers Junction, Redruth. @TolvaddonCFRS are on scene and further resources are en-route".

In a statement they added: "CFRS remain very operationally busy dealing with a number of wildfire and other incidents. Currently we have a large scale 10 pump attendance in the A30 Avers area. Public advised to avoid the area whilst crews work to contain".

Cornwall FRS later said that the fire was spreading towards nearby houses and livestock.

At its height, Cornwall FRS stated: "One fire appliance from Tolvaddon were mobilised to initial reports of a fire on the verge adjacent to the eastbound carriageway of the A30 near to Avers interchange.

"On their arrival they requested assistance, as the fire had spread into fields.

"There are 10 pumps and a water carrier in attendance dealing with the fire, that is spreading towards houses and livestock.

"Fire crews from Tolvaddon x 2, Truro, Falmouth x 2, Perranporth, Bodmin, Newquay, Penzance and Mevagissey, a water carrier from Helston and the incident command unit from St Just are in attendance".

Shortly before 6pm, they added: "The fire was brought under control by 1755hrs. Eight hosereels, one jet, water backpacks and the water carrier were used. One appliance remains at the scene monitoring hotspots".

Inrix Traffic and Travel said: "A30 bypass eastbound closed. Long delays. Queueing traffic due to serious fire at grass verge and smoke blowing across the road from A3047 (Tolvaddon, Tolvaddon) to A30 (Avers Roundabout, Redruth).

"Congestion to traffic diverting through Redruth towards Camborne Redruth Hospital and past Morrisons”.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for several hours but Inrix has confirmed it has since reopened.
