Charity claims homeless people moved out of hotels in Cornwall due to G7
Cornwall Council say the lack of temporary accommodation is not as a result of the G7
A homeless charity in Cornwall says vulnerable people are being moved out of hotels here to free up rooms for G7 this weekend.
Monique Collins is the manager of Disc Newquay and is appalled by what she's seen:
"I know that Cornwall Council will say it has nothing to do with the G7.
"However, we have found that is not to be truthful because people have actually been moved out of Cornwall into the Plymouth area to make way and free up the hotels."
Monique said Cornwall this highlights a wider issue within our county.
She added:
"We are so desperately in need for affordable housing - that's what we're asking."
"We don't want people to stay away from Cornwall and not come on holiday because we're a beautiful area.
"But, it's the underlying poverty that nobody sees and that's what needs addressing."
A Cornwall Council spokesperson told us:
"The lack of availability of temporary accommodation in local hotels is not as a result of G7.
"It is a seasonal issue which has been exacerbated by the exceptional number of people we are supporting due to the pandemic.
"We continue to support those affected and the vast majority were offered alternative accommodation straight away.
"Some have chosen to make their own arrangements and others have not wanted to take up the offer of the available alternative accommodation. We continue to offer support to all those affected to help them find long term homes."
