Homes evacuated after grenade found during house clearance in Mevagissey

Bomb disposal experts were called to Polkirt Hill first thing but the scene is now safe

Police say properties had to be evacuated after the discovery of a grenade during a house clearance in Mevagissey.

The device was found among old military gear at a property on Polkirt Hill on Friday.

Cordons were put in place as bomb disposal experts were called to the scene.

The road was closed for two hours but has since reopened.

At 11.30am, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the scene had been made safe.

In a statement, the force said: "We were called to a property on Polkirt Hill, Mevagissey due to the discovery of old military equipment, including a grenade, following a house clearance in the area.

"Police were notified just before 9am this morning, Friday 4 March, to reports of the discovery of a suspicious device amongst old military gear.

"A diversion was put in place and a closure was put on Portmellon Road.

"Premises close to the property were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.

"EOD attended the scene and made safe.

"The roads have now been re-opened and the scene will be lifted".
