A giant labyrinth made entirely from Cornish hedging is starting to take shape in the heart of Bodmin Moor.

Named 'Kerdroya', the classical labyrinth will be 56 metres wide is diameter and construction is now underway near Colliford Lake.

At the very heart of Kerdroya, a 10m circular space opens out to views across the moorland and lake. Here you will find a one-off specially commissioned art work funded by Arts Council England.

It is believed it could be one of the largest in the world once it is complete, and will allow visitors to have a fully immersive experience as they walk a single, meandering path through stretches of 'artisan stonework'.

Will Coleman from Goldren Tree Productions, who brought you the Man Engine, is behind the idea.

"It's a 56m diameter classical labyrinth, not a maze, a maze is a puzzle in which you get lost, a labyrinth is a single winding path in which you find yourself.

"This entire construction is being made from Cornish hedging. For those of you who don't know a Cornish hedge is not a leafy green load of bushes, but it's not a drystone wall, it's a bit of both."

They are christening the labyrinth as The Outdoor University of Cornish Hedging.

The team will be running a serious of courses aiming to inspire the next generation of Cornish hedgers.

The programme is supported by the Guild of Cornish Hedgers, with 2, 5 and 10-day Lantra accredited courses available.

"The craft of building Cornish hedging is extremely involved.

"It's a craft that has been passed down through the generations, we now know that the oldest Cornish hedges in Cornwall are 4,000 years old."

The team is also welcoming donations of stone from the 12 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty sections across Cornwall, which will be incorporated into the labyrinth’s 12 stretches of artisan stonework, celebrating the various distinct Cornish hedging styles.

It is hoped that Kerdroya could be finished by summer 2022.
