24-hour walk-a-thon to give Liskeard woman with Huntington's her voice back takes place today
Fundraising is taking place to get local Sam a tablet which will enable her to communicate again
A 24-hour walk-a-thon starts in Liskeard today, to make a difference to a Cornish woman's life.
49-year-old Sam, who is currently staying at Beechlawn Nursing Home, has Huntington's disease and has now lost the ability to walk and talk.
But today H-B-H Woolacotts is hoping to improve her quality of life by raising money to buy a special electronic tablet for Sam, so she can communicate with her loved ones again.
Over £10,000 has been raised so far, exceeding the team's original target of £8000 - the cost of the tablet.
The team are now also hoping to get Sam a better and more suitable chair to make her more comfortable with the extra money raised.
Sam's Auntie - Lorraine Dearlove - has arranged the walkathon which is taking place from 12pm today.
Speaking to our presenter Neil Caddy - Lorraine tells us:
"It's very upsetting and frustrating for Sam that she can no longer speak to anybody and she is such a young woman to be in this situation.
"We have raised the money for the tablet and everybody has been so generous.
"When I first told her we were going to get the tablet for her she tried to raise her arms to give me a hug - then when I told her we raised the money, she just cried.
