Former Newquay hotel could be demolished and replaced with new homes

The Hotel California closed back in November last year - and now it could be replaced with 20 apartments and 4 houses

Plans have been revealed to demolish a former Newquay hotel and replace it with 20 apartments and four houses. The Hotel California in Pentire Crescent has been closed since the end of last year.

Now a planning application has been submitted to Cornwall Council to demolish the entire hotel complex and replace it with a residential development. This would include a building with 20 apartments at the higher end of the site and four semi-detached homes at the lower part, all would have views across the River Gannel.

The former hotel closed in November last year with a design and access statement submitted with the new application stating that “after years of steady decay the hotel grew outdated and in a state of disrepair”.

It highlights that a number of new housing developments have been built in the area which have included larger apartment blocks which make use of large plots in Pentire. It states: “Hotel California is amongst the largest buildings and in most disrepair on Pentire Crescent. As building complexes develop the area the hotel has become stagnated in its evolving vernacular.”

The new development is described as: “The proposals look to create a residential development of an appropriate scale and character for this prominent gateway site to Pentire Crescent. The proposed residential use of the site is consistent with the properties in the surrounding area.

“Located on the upper section of the site is the apartment building. There is a total of 20 apartments, 18 two bed units on the lower three level of residential accommodation and one three bed unit and one four bed unit on the top floor.”

The four semi-detached houses planned for the development would each have four bedrooms. All properties would have outside areas either a balcony, roof terrace or private garden.
