A flooded underpass is set to be cleared of water – four weeks after members of the public first complained. The pedestrian route to Asda in St Austell has been blocked by rainwater for weeks due to blocked drains.

The subway – which runs under the busy A390 – is the only pedestrian route to the supermarket for anyone needing to get over the road. However the blocked drains led to water collecting with some claiming it was ankle deep.

Jayson Flesher took to Facebook to raise concerns about the flooded walkway writing: “Four weeks now and counting it is beyond a joke now the Asda underpass is still flooded quite deeply now and no one is doing anything about it there are some people who have no choice but to use the underpass it is dangerous.”

And Mari Scott added: “I crossed the bypass rather than walk through the water which would have completely drenched my shoes, as the water’s up to my ankles. Crossing the bypass was a whole other kind of dangerous, I should have taken my shoes off and walked through the puddle!”

Others said that the flooding was causing difficulties for people with children in buggies and those using mobility scooters and wheelchairs as they would have to go through the water.

When the Local Democracy Reporting Service went to the site to see the extent of the flooding we saw several people turn around and look for an alternative route to get to the supermarket.

Cornwall Council said that the issue had been reported to the authority and that they would be organising for the drain to be cleared and the issue resolved “as soon as possible”.
