Five-year-old girl from Saltash area dies following serious crash in Devon
An eight-year-old from the same family is being treated in hospital
A five-year-old girl from the Saltash area has died following a serious crash in Devon.
Four other people were taken to hospital after two cars collided on the A35 near Honiton.
A man and woman in their 30s are among the casualties, as well as an eight-year-old girl.
She is being treated for serious injuries, however police say they are not believed to be life-threatening.
The collision happened in the Wilmington area on Sunday afternoon.
Police, paramedics and firefighters rushed to the scene shortly after 2.30pm.
Devon and Cornwall Police have thanked people for their patience after several roads in the area were closed for around eight hours.
Witnesses and anyone with information is being urged to contact police on 101, quoting log 465 of 16th January.
In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed two vehicles were caught in the crash at Fern Lane.
The force gave an updates on the casualties' conditions: "The driver of the Land Rover, a woman in her 50s from the Tooting area of London area was taken to Dorchester Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
"The driver of the BMW who is a man in his 30s plus a female passenger also in her 30s was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be serious.
"An eight-year-old girl remains in hospital after sustaining serious injuries, but these are not thought to be life-threatening.
"Tragically, a five-year-old girl who was also a passenger in the BMW died following the collision. All four occupants of the BMW are a family from the Saltash area of Cornwall.
"Police are appealing for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the incident or witnessed the collision itself.
"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage that could assist with the investigation".
Devon and Cornwall Police added: "The Roads Policing Team would like to thank the public for their patience shown whilst the road was closed as emergency services attended and a forensic investigation of the scene was undertaken".
