A rare sighting of a whole fish INSIDE a jellyfish has been made on a beach in north Cornwall.

The whiting, found at Harlyn near Padstow, can be seen through the clear bell of the compass jelly.

It was discovered by Cornwall Wildlife Trust supporter Ian Watkin during National Marine Week.

Experts think the fish may have been stung and eaten while using the tentacles for protection.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust tweeted: "The most extraordinary find of #NationalMarineWeek?

"This compass jellyfish was found in #HarlynBay with a large fish inside its bell!

"Often juvenile fish hide amongst jellyfish tentacles for protection but this one's been unlucky by becoming lunch".

The trust added a reminder to report all dead marine animals to its Marine Strandings Network hotline on 0345 201 2626.
