Firefighters and emergency service crews remain on the scene in Falmouth - after a blaze at a compost pile a week ago.

Those with conditions like asthma are urged to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution following the incident.

The team say they are working with partner agencies to minimise the impact to residents and the environment.

Local MP for Truro and Falmouth, Jayne Kirkham, said: "It's a huge area, and the compost is very difficult to manage.

"I've spoken to the emergency services, and they have told me that it's not toxic - but the smell is quite overpowering.

"Some people have said the smell has been strong - and it's best to stay away as much as you can, and keep windows and doors closed."

Falmouth Town Councillor, Deborah Clegg, said: "Over last weekend, the closest people were quite concerned because they were on the far side of the prevailing wind, and there are a lot of houses there - so it must have been quite uncomfortable.

"I think compost fires are really hard to put out, and the fire officer told me they're liaising with the Environment Agency.

"They can't move the pile, they need to dowse it, so I'm sure conversations are happening as to where the water's actually going to come from.

"I just want to thank the emergency services for getting up there - and I'm hopeful they'll put it out soon."

In an update overnight, Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "There have been no incidents of note since the last posting.

"Cornwall Fire and Rescue service are actively managing a large fire involving green waste in the Falmouth area. Crews are taking appropriate action alongside partner agencies to minimise the impact to residents and the environment.

"As there will be varying smoke levels for some time, residents may want to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution - particularly individuals with conditions like asthma. If anyone experiences new or worsening symptoms, they are advised to contact their GP or NHS 111."
