A globe display of the Earth has been put up in Truro Cathedral.
The impressive Earth artwork, created by artist Luke Jerram, measures seven metres in diameter and slowly rotates whilst suspended above the cathedral Crossing.
Visitors across Cornwall are invited to see and experience the work until Saturday 28 October.
The giant internally lit globe creates a sense of the Overview Effect experienced by astronauts when viewing the Earth from space – provoking a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
Sean O’Neill, chief operating officer, said: "As I lay on the floor of the cathedral last night, surrounded by almost total darkness and looking up at Gaia illuminated and slowly rotating I was truly mesmerised by it. I hope that others find themselves moved by it as colleagues and visitors have been today."
A specially made surround-sound composition by BAFTA award-winning Composer Dan Jones is being played alongside the sculpture, adding a further dimension to the viewing experience.
Luke Jerram, the artist, said: "I'm really pleased to see my Gaia artwork in the beautiful setting of Truro Cathedral, and I hope that visitors will get to see what an incredibly beautiful and precious planet we live on. I would encourage locals to check out the events programme to get thinking more about the ways we can look after our planet - our only home."
All visitors can visit Truro Cathedral free of charge during Visiting hours with donations of ÂŁ5/adult encouraged where possible.
You can find full details about events and speeches happening at the Gaia exhibition whilst it is at Truro Cathedral on their website.
