Driver dies after serious crash on A39 in Cornwall

A stretch between Bude and Kilkhampton was closed overnight after two cars collided

Police have confirmed a 60-year-old man has died after a serious crash on the A39 in north Cornwall.

Two cars collided on the stretch between Bude and Kilkhampton just before 6pm on Wednesday evening.

The driver who lost his life was rushed to Derriford Hospital but, sadly, was pronounced dead.

The other suffered minor injuries and was taken to North Devon District Hospital.

The road was closed in both directions as investigators worked at the scene but has since reopened.

"At approximately 5.55pm on Wednesday 24th February 2021 Police were informed of a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A39 between Bude and Kilkhampton between a black Mini Cooper and a grey VW Passatt.

"One driver sustained minor injuries and attended North Devon District Hospital. A 60 year old male driver was conveyed to Derriford Hospital but was sadly pronounced deceased on arrival.

"Local neighbourhood officers and officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team attended along with a Forensic Collision Investigator and Scenes of Crime Officer.

"A full investigation of the scene took place and officers are working to establish the cause of this collision.

"Police would like to thank the public for their patience while they investigated the scene and are appealing for any witnesses of this collision or may have dash cam footage to telephone 101 quoting Log 714 24/02/2021".

Inrix Traffic and Travel says the incident happened on the sharp bend between Kilkhampton and Stratton.

"A39 in both directions re-opened. Recovery work completed and accident cleared from Ivyleaf Golf Course (Bude) to the Stibb turn-off (Kilkhampton).

"A serious accident occurred on the sharp bend between Kilkhampton and Stratton just before 18:00 last night (Wednesday 24th February)".
