Vigils have been held across the UK in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, including in Cornwall.

Dozens of people gathered outside Truro Cathedral on Sunday, just days after Russia's invasion began.

They were holding Ukrainian flags and signs calling on President Putin to end the war.

Demonstrators are also pushing for as much support as possible from UK leaders and others across Europe.

"It's so upsetting and so crazy"

David and his Ukrainian partner, Kristina, were among those who attended the vigil.

The couple met while they were working in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and now live in Mevagissey.

Kristina said: "I was in contact with one of my former team members and he said some people from Europe - he's in Kyiv - some people from Europe have reached out to him already and it's so important for the people in Ukraine to show that we are with them, even if we are not ready to take up arms".

She described what is happening as "so upsetting and so crazy", before David added: "I think that if this situation continues and Putin wins Ukraine, it won't stop there.

"It's Ukraine today but which other country tomorrow? And I think that's the danger to all of us".

Marta from Poland is studying in Falmouth and told us as soon as she knew there was a vigil in Truro, she had to show up.

She said: "Well it's absolutely horrific but I'm so proud of all the communities that are coming together in the face of this crisis.

"All the glory to Ukraine and Ukrainians who are standing their ground and fighting for their independence".

She continued by saying: "I only wish I could do more but I am so proud that so many people showed up because it is all our issue".

The vigil in Truro was organised by the group Cornwall for Europe who, ahead of the event, called for as many people as possible to show their support.

The said: "We share with our European neighbours the values of peace, democracy and the freedom to work, travel and prosper across Europe.

"The invasion by Russia of a European neighbour threatens world peace and will disrupt economies across the continent.

"We grieve for the innocent lives already lost and we are fearful for the future".

The statement continued: "This vigil is a small way in which Cornish people can stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

"We hope those attending may wear the colours of Ukraine – yellow and blue".
