People across Cornwall are being invited to join a doorstep vigil, to demand safety for women and show solidarity with Sarah Everard.

The 33-year-old disappeared while walking home in south London last week.

Human remains were found in woodland in Kent on Wednesday which police have now confirmed to be hers.

The case has sparked nationwide discussions about women's safety.

Vigils in Sarah's memory were planned across the country over the weekend but Newquay's has been cancelled as it breaches Covid rules.

Organisers say they will reschedule the Cornwall event when coronavirus restrictions allow.

Instead people are asked to light candles in windows or on their doorsteps at 6pm on Saturday evening.

The organiser of the cancelled event in Newquay is reminding women that they are not alone and the issue is still very much important.

Posting on Facebook she said: "I'm really sad to say that I've had a call from Newquay Police and they've advised that they, along with the National Police Council, are not in support of any vigils taking place across the UK as they will in breach of Covid regulations, despite the Met and other authorities initially being in support. Apparently the Home Secretary will be making this clear.

"The Police advised that if anyone attends the Barrowfields with the intention of attending the vigil they will be asked to leave - if you refuse they will enforce this.

"This is extremely sad, difficult and enraging as there were thousands of people across the country who were prepared to use this moment to show solidarity and demand safety for women & girls in a Covid-secure way.

"WE WILL BE ORGANISING A PEACEFUL VIGIL AS SOON AS REGULATIONS ALLOW - so please stay on this page and join our Reclaim The Night, Cornwall page for further updates.

"Finally to any women and girls out there who are feeling vulnerable, sad or angry right now...we see you - we hear you and we are with you! You are not alone."
