A dog has died after falling over a cliff edge on the north Cornwall coast.

Boscastle Coastguard made the tragic discovery after being called to Backway Cove.

Crews had received reports of two dogs in difficulty at the scene, south of Trebarwith Strand.

The Port Isaac inshore lifeboat recovered the poor animal on the morning of Easter Saturday.

Luckily, the owner managed to save the other dog from the water before rescuers arrived.

"Boscastle team paged this morning to two dogs that had gone over at Backway Cove, south of Trebarwith Strand.

"From our understanding, one of the dogs had been rescued from the water by its owner and taken straight to the vets for treatment - we wish the dog a speedy recovery.

"With one dog accounted for, the search was on for dog number 2 and a hasty search was carried out by two search teams searching the north and south of the cove, when a member of the team spotted the dog to the lower ledge of the cliff face, south of Backway Cove.

"A cliff technician was discussed as an option, but due to the location and inadequate space to set up rope access, it was deemed necessary to ask Falmouth control room to task @PortIsaacRnli to help with the recovery of the dog.

"With Port Isaac LB quickly on scene, a CG team member brought them in via comms to the location of the dog, and with some very skilful manoeuvres around some rocks an RNLI crew member then managed to scramble up to the dog.

"Unfortunately at this point, the comms on the radio had come through to confirm the dog sadly didn't make it .

"With the dog taken away, all teams were stood down".
