The South West’s health and care heroes are being honoured in NHS Parliamentary Awards 2020.

MPs and NHS leaders in the region have joined forces to honour health and care staff who have helped to improve treatment for patients in the regional round of the awards.

Winners in the 10 regional categories, which range from Excellence in Primary Care to the Lifetime Achievement Award, include a consultant radiologist who is recognised for 40 years of service and a dental team who are reaching out to vulnerable people.

The coronavirus pandemic, the greatest public health challenge in the NHS history, has helped prompt a record number of nominations from MPs across the country who have sought to shine a light on the dedication of nurses, midwives, GPs, physios, pharmacists, healthcare assistants, porters, cleaners, and countless other staff who have contributed to the unprecedented response.

Dr Giles Maskell, Consultant Radiologist for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, has been chosen as the South West Regional Winner in the category of Lifetime Achievement.

Now in his 30th year as a full time NHS consultant in Cornwall, Dr Maskell has established one of the country's leading radiology departments, and one of the first to be rated as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Dr Maskell has also undertaken many national roles, including President of the Royal College of Radiologists, and advisor to NHS England and Improvement on the response to Covid-19 and subsequent recovery of diagnostic services.

Discussing his success, Dr Maskell commented: "I'm amazed and delighted. The NHS Parliamentary Awards have a long tradition of recognizing excellence in healthcare, and to be chosen as the South West Regional Winner in the category of Lifetime Achievement is incredibly humbling."

Dr Maskell continues: "While I'm extremely grateful to receive this accolade, I prefer to regard it as recognition for the whole radiology team in Cornwall. Without their hard work and commitment to patient care, nothing we've achieved would be possible."

Kate Shields, Chief Executive of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, backed the nomination, explaining: "Throughout his career, Dr Maskell has been at the forefront of leading improvements in health and care in Cornwall. He has supported the RCHT and the wider NHS services in a variety of roles and has created a lasting legacy that can be seen in the extraordinary work of our radiology department."

The official ceremony for the awards will take place at the Palace of Westminster in July 2021. By being named the South West Regional winner, Dr Maskell will also be shortlisted for the national award, which will be named next year.
