'Water users' across Cornwall are being encouraged to play their part in protecting our seas by dipping in cold water every day this month.

It’s part of the Surfer’s Against Sewage campaign to raise awareness about sewage pollution in our seas.

The charity says Cornish communities are driving the change and demanding action is taken to improve water quality.

It’s as rainy weather lead to further sewage discharge along the coast, with more than forty alerts in place over the weekend (21st-22nd September).

As part of work to hold water companies to account, the charity takes samples from the sea to gather data.

Community water quality manager Kirsty Davies explains:

“We have a local group of community members called the St Agnes water user group. They’re incredible and doing great things to end sewage pollution at their local beach by taking water quality samples to monitor levels of bacteria.”

“Grassroots is all about communities raising the issue locally and then that feeds to national work – pushing policy, pushing government to make change and end sewage pollution.”
