Devon & Cornwall Police insist ALL complaints of sexual assault involving serving officers are thoroughly investigated.

It comes after figures revealed 29 were made between 2016 and 2020.

One of the cases led to a dismissal and three resulted in management action.

The data was obtained under the Freedom of Information Act after the kidnap, assault and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Met Police officer.

Now our force has described abusing powers for sexual gain as "wholly unacceptable" and says it "undermines their trust".

In a statement, Devon & Cornwall Police said: "Devon & Cornwall Police respond swiftly and robustly to any allegations of a serious nature, such as inappropriate sexual behaviour, made against serving police officers,

"All complaints of sexual assault are thoroughly investigated by the Force Professional Standards Department.

"Between 2016 and 2020, the Force determined that there was no case to answer for the majority of the allegations made. In three cases officers received management action and one officer was dismissed.

"Police officers abusing their powers for sexual gain is wholly unacceptable.

"It undermines the essential trust that the public places in our service as well as the efforts of the vast majority of our officers who come to work to keep people safe.

"We expect the utmost integrity, honesty and professionalism from our staff at all times and the public can be assured that we will always take the appropriate action when standards fall below those expected of all.

"Individuals will receive discipline sanctions where misconduct is proven.

"Where appropriate, the Force will refer cases to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in accordance with national guidance".
