Scale of damage following major gorse fire near Redruth

Photos have revealed the scale of the damage after a massive gorse fire near Redruth.

Firefighters arrived at the scene in the Wheal Uny area to find a 400m wall of flames.

Critical Control received more than 80 emergency calls, with locals saying they could see the smoke from across the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area.

Crews from Tolvaddon, Hayle, Helston, St Dennis, Truro, Falmouth, St Just rushed to the scene just after 9.30pm on Saturday (24th April).

The blaze engulfed an area spanning 400m, was being fanned by strong winds and was close to high voltage power lines.

"At 2130hrs Critical Control in Tolvaddon received the first of 84 repeat calls reporting a gorse fire in the Wheal Uny Area of Redruth.

"On arrival crews stated a large fire with a 400 metre front.

"Appliances from Tolvaddon, Hayle, Helston, St Dennis, Truro, Falmouth, St Just and two Flexi Duty Officers attended. Crews fought the fire throughout the night".

The blaze was one of three major gorse fires in Cornwall over the weekend, following a long dry spell and strong winds.

One at Roche Rock reignited on Sunday and another, at Zoar on the Lizard, burned through the night on Sunday.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service have issued several warnings about the risk of wildfires, urging people to take care with BBQs and bonfires.
