A Crowdfunder has been launched to help reopen Falmouth's leisure centre - and the group behind it say it has already generated huge support.

The town council has negotiated an option to take over Ships and Castles under a devolution deal.

Pendennis Leisure Community Interest Company, who would run the site, are now working to unlock funding.

In a statement, Pendennis Leisure said: "It's been around a year since our journey started and a lot of hard work has taken place across the community and we're still here!

"Of late there has been some great progress in working together with Falmouth Town Council - who have negotiated an option to take over the site under a Devolution Deal.

"Now Falmouth Town Council want a community partner to take it on and run it - which is where we come in.

"We are now at a crucial time where we are beginning to crystallise options to reopen the pool - but in order to do this we need to unlock funding.

"The first step is to start a "Crowdfunder" in order to allow the community to make a positive contribution to the future of their pool and demonstrate how much people care.

"The Crowdfunder went live yesterday and is already generating overwhelming interest - but we want to make this as successful as possible, hence why we are directly contacting you".

The Crowdfunder reached its initial target within 24hrs and is now hoping to raise £25,000.

Posting on Facebook, Pendennis Leisure said: "Wow!! We never dared dream we'd practically achieve our initial target in one afternoon evening. Thank-you so much everyone! The hope and optimism you are sharing is inspiring and very motivating".

The latest update on the Crowdfunder page states: "Any extra money we raise now will help pay for the costs of actually recommissioning the pool.

"There's a lot to do in terms of replacing missing equipment, servicing equipment, expert surveys... this is just the beginning! Our current timeline is to try and open Ships by the summer of 2023".
