Nearly half of people in Cornwall have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, figures reveal.

NHS data shows 216,072 people had received a vaccine jab by February 28 – equating to 46% of those aged 16 and over, according to the latest population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

Of those vacccinated, 135,162 were aged 65 or over – 95% of the age group.

It means 80,910 people aged between 16 and 64 have received a first dose of the vaccine.

The data also reveals variation in uptake between different areas across Cornwall.

The proportion of residents prioritised for vaccinations, such as those aged over 65, is one factor that could affect vaccine coverage.

Health bosses say that areas with an older population, or more vulnerable residents, will have a higher uptake.

Areas with the highest uptake:

1) Looe and Polperro, with 57.2%

2) Lanreath, Pelynt and Polraun, 56.4%

3) Shortlanesend, Chacewater and Carnon Downs, 55.6%

Areas with the lowest uptake:

1) Penryn, 28.5%

2) Falmouth North, 30.1%

3) Falmouth East, 31.8%

NHS Kernow says areas with an older population will have a higher vaccine uptake. But Falmouth has a younger population, who have not yet been invited for their Covid jabs.__

“We are working hard to vaccinate the most vulnerable people in our community, including anyone aged 16 to 64, who has an underlying health condition that puts them at serious risk of COVID and people with a learning disability, as quickly as possible. We would urge anyone who has been contacted by our GP-led primary care networks to not hesitate and make their appointment today.

"Falmouth has a significantly younger population than in other parts of Cornwall. When it is their turn they will be invited by the NHS for their COVID vaccination.”

Across England, 17.2 million people had received their first dose of a vaccine by February 28, covering 38% of the population aged 16 and over.

That includes 9.7 million people aged 65 and over – 94% of the age group.

A small number of people are not included due to their age being unknown.

This week nearly two million people aged 60 to 63 were sent letters inviting them to book a coronavirus jab.

It follows the NHS writing to almost 450,000 people aged 64 last week over getting a first dose, as well as 600,000 at-risk individuals who have recently been asked to shield.

The Government has pledged to offer vaccinations to everyone aged over 50 by the end of April.
