147 cases of coronavirus confirmed in Cornwall over the weekend

It's the highest number of cases recorded over a weekend period, in the Duchy, since October

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has almost doubled compared to the previous weekend, according to official figures.

There were 147 new cases over the weekend, compared with 78 the weekend previous ( 12th and 13th December).

It is the highest number of recorded cases in the Duchy over a weekend period since the end of October.

Public Health England figures show that 4,407 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Monday (December 21) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, up from 4,260 the same time on Friday.

The health body is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government's mass testing programme.

The rate of infection in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now stands at 771 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 3,149.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 96,344 over the period, to 2,073,511.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly's cases were among the 96,433 recorded across the South West, a figure which rose by 3,187 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
