People in Cornwall thanked for 'doing their bit' as coronavirus cases continue to fall

People in Cornwall are being urged not to become complacent, now we know the roadmap out of lockdown.

Cornwall Council's public health team has revealed our coronavirus case rate currently stands at 39.7 per 100,00 people.

The local authority has said that the Duchy's recovery will be long and difficult, but insist we WILL recover.

It also calling for more government funding to support businesses hit by the pandemic.

The easing of restrictions will begin with the reopening of schools on the 8th of March.

Cornwall's officials have told parents that children's mental health and wellbeing will be paramount as they return to school.

They are urging any mums and dads with concerns about kids going back to classrooms to contact their teachers.

"Like many of us I listened to the Prime Minister's announcement on Monday of his proposed roadmap out of lockdown. Whilst it's positive to see a way ahead, there is still much to consider.

"A phased approach to easing rules is sensible and I'm cautiously optimistic that as the vaccine rollout continues to gather pace, we may finally be entering the end game in this stage of our battle against the virus.

"It's good to know that we're not going back to tiers, but taking a nationwide approach.

"In Cornwall, we're continuing to see the case numbers fall. That's a direct result of residents and businesses following public health guidance and I'd like to thank you all for doing your bit. Thank you.

"This latest lockdown has been incredibly difficult for all of us, but it's vitally important that we keep following the rules. It's still too early to relax and let our guard down. We've seen the fast rate at which infections can surge so there's no room for complacency. Please continue to follow the public health guidance with the same diligence you have shown up to now".
