Cornwall has experienced its wettest January on record as 2026 begins with exceptionally heavy rainfall across the UK.

According to the Met Office, a strong jet stream has pushed repeated low-pressure systems across the country, bringing frequent rain and strong winds.

The result has been weeks of unsettled weather, with many areas feeling like winter has been “stuck on repeat”.

In Cornwall, Cardinham near Bodmin recorded 40 consecutive days of measurable rainfall between the end of December and early February.

Camborne also saw 37 straight days of rain.

Provisional figures show England has already seen 59% of its average February rainfall - and that was recorded by February 8. Across the UK, rainfall totals are well above average for this point in the month.

January was particularly extreme. Cornwall recorded its wettest January since records began, with similar records falling across parts of the South West.

Forecasters say the persistent rain has left ground saturated and rivers highly responsive to further downpours.

Local weather experts have warned that prolonged wet conditions can increase the risk of cliff erosion along Cornwall’s coastline.

Drivers are also being urged to take extra care. New research suggests nearly half of UK motorists do not adjust their driving style in wet weather, despite increased stopping distances and the risk of aquaplaning.

Experts advise reducing speed, increasing following distances and avoiding harsh braking in heavy rain.

The Met Office says there may be short breaks in the unsettled pattern, but further rain is expected before the end of the month.

With more than half of February still to go, rainfall totals could rise even further.
