Cornwall has seen a new year spike in people filing for divorce on what is dubbed 'divorce day'.

It is suggested that the first working day of the year is always the busiest for solicitors that deal with family law matters.

One business here in the Duchy had 10 new enquiries on Tuesday 4th January alone this year, followed by eight the next day.

Grigg's Law also saw traffic to the divorce pages of their website jump two thirds last year, amid stresses of the pandemic.

Owner Kelly Grigg say it is important that individuals get the legal advice and support they need.

She said: “This time of year, after the stress and strain of Christmas and at the beginning of the new year, is when we see a spike in enquiries from clients who have decided to call time on their relationships.

“At what is a very stressful and emotional time, it’s sensible to get advice from a family solicitor to fully understand the options and processes involved so you feel informed and in control every step of the way.

“I understand that that every family is different. As a mother myself I recognise the difficulties faced by my clients. I take pride in adopting a constructive and pragmatic approach in resolving family issues. Where possible aiming to avoid conflict by reaching out of court agreements as this is often the route with the most favourable outcome for all.”

Coronavirus has, sadly, also played a part in the breakdown of relationships. Google data highlighted this with an increase of up to 500% for divorce related search terms in December 2020 compared to the year before. This December saw a further 25% increase in related searches online.

“The pandemic and lockdowns have put extra pressure on many couples,” adds Kelly. “It has put extra strain on their relationships as they were faced with so many uncertainties, financial concerns and spending so much time together at home.”
