Two separate Cornish hospitality businesses close due to soaring costs
The Wig and Pen in Truro, and Kernow Dine and Deli in Falmouth, have announced immediate closures
Two separate hospitality businesses in Cornwall have shut their doors ahead of the summer holidays.
Kernow Dine and Deli in Falmouth and the Wig and Pen in Truro have each announced immediate closures.
It is as a result of the cost of living crisis, which they warn is continuing to put pressure on pubs, restaurants and cafes.
Popular pub Wig & Pen, which has been under management of Tom and Lara for the past two and a half years, posted on Facebook:
"It’s with very heavy hearts that after two and a half years at the Wig & Pen we let you all know we’ve made the extremely difficult decision to move on from managing the pub and have closed the site with immediate effect.
"The combination of high tax rates, energy bills, and other continually rising costs means despite looking at every possible option we are left with no choice but to call time at the bar.
"A huge, huge thank you to all our fantastic team and customers with whom we’ve shared this journey - it was brilliant, truly."
Kernow Dine and Deli in Falmouth have only been open for eight months, before announcing a sudden closure for similar challenging circumstances.
On a post on Facebook, the owners said: "We’re sad to say we’re having to close the deli and restaurant after only 8 months.
"We’ve been hit hard by the cost of living crisis, high energy prices, VAT, huge price increases for buying ingredients, a lack of footfall plus ridiculously high duty costs and taxes for alcohol.
"It’s a difficult year for hospitality businesses in Cornwall - please support your local bar, shop, café or pub, otherwise they may not be there next year."
