A Cornish secondary school has sent a letter to parents amid a rise in coronavirus cases.

Newquay Tretherras is reporting both staff and student absences and says infection control measures are being introduced.

The letter also states that those who have tested positive are staying at home.

It reads: "We have been advised that there a growing number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the school this week.

"This is not only affecting student absence but also staff absence.

"We are covering lessons primarily by the staff we have left in the building and Tretherras staff are going 'above and beyond' to cover for colleagues during lessons and break duties.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding during this ongoing challenge".

The school says that whilst the legal requirement to test and isolate has changed, they want to take steps to reduce transmission.

The letter continues: "Students and staff who have tested positive are staying at home and will return to the setting once they are well and have completed the recommended isolation period.

"Outbreak control measures have been introduced and are being kept under review".

Tretherras is asking parents to "consider their child's wellness" before sending them in each morning.

The school says if pupils are feeling unwell then the best place for them is at home, as other winter bugs circulate.

You can read the full letter, issued on Wednesday, on the Newquay Tretherras website.
