Three buildings in a Cornish village, used by fishermen for centuries, have been saved by potential developers after a campaign to retain them reached its target of £300,000.

Members of the Cadgwith Fishing Cove Trust, located on the Lizard peninsular, decided to raise funds to purchase the three historic buildings, after hearing how developers wanted to tear down the structures and build holiday lets and second homes in their place.

Just last month, the trust had managed to reach the £100,000 mark within 11 days of starting the campaign.

After surpassing their target, the buildings have been saved from development and will be used for generations to come.

Members of the trust say they are 'astounded at how much love there is for Cadgwith and for preserving the future of our fishermen.'

With more fundraising events due to take place in the coming month, members of the Cadgwith Fishing Cove Trust are now looking to raise extra funds to repair and refurbish the buildings.

The buildings have been used by fishermen for centuries.

"We have now reached our £300,000 target, and have enough money to purchase the ancient fishing buildings. They have been saved from development.

"We are now focussed on raising money to repair and refurbish these fishing buildings which have not had anything spent on them for a very long time. We have leaking roofs and decaying structure that can all be put right if we have the means.

"We want to bring the buildings up to a good standard for the fishermen to use going forward and minimise the ongoing maintenance required. Every additional pound raised will make a difference.

"We are all astounded at how much love there is for Cadgwith and for preserving the future of our fishermen.

"We are so grateful and humbled with the strength of public support.

"Thank you to every single one of the 8,552+ people who have given us a donation so far and are supporting us in so many ways.

"The fishermen have renewed hope and a spring in their step. The threat to their future has been removed, and they now know they have future, fishing from the cove."
