Cornish choir honours Prince Philip and rugby win with own version of Trelawney
They are also celebrating a great Cornish rugby victory which took place 30 years ago
A Cornish choir is honouring Prince Philip and celebrating a great Cornish rugby victory.
30 years ago Cornwall won the English Rugby County Championships at Twickenham and the team were presented the cup by the Duke of Edinburgh.
Now Truro City Choir has decided to release their own version of Trelawney in the Duke's memory and to mark the anniversary year.
"Although a normal shopping day, on Saturday 20th April 1991 the streets of Truro were deserted, and every shop window displayed a live television. Cornwall was playing in the final of the English Rugby County Championships.
"Twickenham was awash with the Cornish colours of black and gold. Colin Gregory, local news reporter, produced a book about the event in which he says “Something happened on 20th April 1991 that united the people of Cornwall in a way nothing had done since the days of Bishop Trelawny, hundreds of years before.” Cornwall not only won but the cup was presented by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh."

The choir originally produced the video for this year’s virtual St Piran’s Day, but felt it equally appropriate to the nation’s recent loss and the anniversary of the Cup win.
