Women across the world are being encouraged to hit the waves to improve their overall wellness following a new initiative created by a Cornish-based surf magazine.

The Vitamin Sea Collective, which launched on Wednesday 14th October, is a members-only global community which aims to focus on the positive benefits of the sea - providing surfing, health and fitness for women of all ages and abilities

Members will be able to learn from real professionals, interact with instructors and have access to engaging live classes, workshops and tutorials. Covering nutrition, health, wellbeing, mental health, surf, yoga, and more.

They also conduct activities out of the water.

The brain-child behind the collective is the all-female power team at SurfGirl Magazine, the biggest female surf media in the world.

“It just allows your mind to kind of switch off because you're instantly surrounded by so much beauty.

“It's really hard to worry about the things that affect you on land. I kind of feel like when you enter the water all your problems just wash away, and you have a lot more clarity.”

Corinne Jones, Assistant Editor, SurfGirl Magazine

The idea was borne out of the coronavirus pandemic. The magazine saw big upsurge in its social media content with increased interest in the live fitness, yoga and mediation classes put on during lockdown.

When restrictions eased the decision was made to do something more permanent, reacting to feedback that it had been a real lifeline.

“It occurred to us that we needed to create a space for women who love spending time in the ocean and through that the Vitamin Sea Collective was essentially born.

“It's just a really lovely space for women to come together to expand their knowledge of surfing, feel more empowered to learn about how the ocean can help them with anxiety and depression and just hopefully leave them feeling really amazing”

The benefits to mental health from staying positive, keeping fit and getting in the surf or by the ocean will be even more vital the second time around as we head back into further restrictions.

“As surfers the ocean is our passion, our playground and when were facing our own storms seas, our salvation, and this is what we would love to share with other salty souls around the country”

There are myths surrounding the sport of surfing that it is predominantly for the male population. However, Corinne says that the tides are changing:

“We bring the women together and show them that there definitely is a space for them in surfing and it isn't male-dominated. I feel like the more and more women that get involved with the sport or at least show an interest in the sport; It’s only going to have a positive effect on it in the long run.”
