Cornwall's Community Larder network grows thanks to cash grant
Treverbyn Community Trust were able to buy a van so it can deliver surplus food to residents across the Duchy who are in need
More residents in Cornwall will have access to a community larder thanks to a financial grant from Cornwall Council.
With the funds, Treverbyn Community Trust has been able to purchase a new van, which enables them to provide more local communities with a Community Larder by stopping off at different locations.
The van starts its first round on the Thursday 21st January to benefit the villages of Roche, St Dennis, St Columb Major, Indian Queens and Fraddon.
Community Larders help to reduce waste food by collecting surplus food from supermarkets and giving it to anyone who wants to come and help themselves. This allows everyone do something positive to reduce our impact on the environment and helps save money at the same time.
Community Larders also provide additional food bags to people who are struggling financially or facing a crisis in their lives. These can be requested by contacting Treverbyn Community Trust.
Since the first lockdown in 2020, the charity has been operating a Community Larder at Treverbyn Community Hall, and along with a number of partner organisations, has helped to deliver pop-up Community Larders in Penwithick, St Austell, Mevagissey, Minorca Lane - Bugle, Roche and St Dennis.
Now with the new van, Treverbyn Community Trust can expand the Community Larder network and reach more communities.
“We are starting our first round on Thursday the 21st to benefit some of the clay villages. Once this Thursday round is bedded in, we will look to develop others to benefit communities like Whitemoor, Nanpean, St Stephens and Trewoon.
“We are interested in hearing from anyone living in these areas that could help either by picking up surplus from nearby supermarkets or by helping to do local deliveries to people who can’t get out to the community larder.”
