Community fridge opens in Saltash to help those who are struggling during lockdown
Community Fridge and Larder Saltash provides food, that would otherwise end up in landfill, free of charge to anyone who needs it

A project. aimed at giving away surplus food free of charge to anyone in Saltash who needs it, is going from strength to strength.
Started in November by Community Enterprises PL12, the Community Fridge and Larder has been given access to surplus food that would otherwise end up going in the bin.
It not only reduces the amount of food going to waste but helps to feed people and give them access to healthy food.
Unlike a foodbank, anyone can use the service and choose from a wide range of produce.
The project is currently sharing around 400kg of surplus food a week.
In a typical week, it will see donations of bread and baked goods, eggs, fresh fruit and veg, dried pasta, rice and noodles, tinned foods, cakes, cereal, filled rolls and UHT milk and much more.
“This has been a long time in the making and we have tried over the last few years to get the Community Fridge off the ground.
"It makes perfect sense, that it’s been such a success now. Lockdown situations have made our community appreciate a lot more what we have, and how we distribute that to help others.
“It’s actually really humbling. We’ve been blown away by the way the community has embraced this project in such a short space of time.
"It helps to bring people together, promoting a sense of commonality and community that is so important during this pandemic. We’re thrilled!
“We will soon be training a new cohort of volunteers and, hopefully soon be offering a mobile version of the Community Fridge and Larder to travel out to help those who are isolating or unable to get to the Hub at 4, Fore Street."
